CD #1:“The first bombardment showed us our mistake, and under the world as they taught it to us broke in pieces. While they continued to write and talk, we saw the wounding and the dying. While they taught that duty to one’s country is the greatest thong, we already knew that death-throes are stronger” (13).

Summary for AQWF, Chapter 1:
Before the war began, the band of brothers, were falsely led to believe that war was glamourous. The truth was it was a gruesome nightmare. They realized that death was everywhere and at any moment their friends or even themselves could breathe their last breath. Paul had to face the fact that already one of his friends has been taken from him, Kemmerich. Despite the horrors that Paul has faced and that are still to come he will keep fighting because it is for his country.
