Essential question: Please define “Bombardment”
- “A cackle of geese,” this represent home and it is very disarming for Paul.
- Earth is being metaphorically used a symbol representing a “lover,” protecting, and creating a safe harbor.

- Men become a “tool”-an instrument of a part of the war machine.
- Remarque personifies the "dark" and gives it life as the men try to navigate through the bombing while their fellow soldiers and horses are crying out in pain and dying.
- Summary: Bombardment creates the terror of war that Paul has not yet experienced. He fights to stay alive by covering himself with a coffin. The brutality of wounded and dying horses create longing and suffering among his fellow soldiers.The message: war is intolerable but one must survive and protect his fellow soldier.
